ABOUT ME

IMG Year 1 FMP

My name is Izzy and this is my documentation of the research and development of my FMP as a part of the IMG year 1 course. I am planning to focus in on game mechanics and a smaller focus on music and art/sprite development. Some of my hobbies are art, music, reading and obviously video games. When I graduate from college I plan to go to university for games design and eventually pursue a career in the industry.

Some of my favourite games include Red Dead Redemption 2, the Life is Strange series and The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

After completing the last 3 projects I think that my skills are most suited towards work in construct, and coding the mechanics of a game instead of creating the art around it. I was able to pick it up much easier than artistic skills and could work very efficiently. I also enjoyed creating the music for the game in the D.T.U.R project, it was probably one of my favourite parts of that project and definitely something I wanted to focus on more.

So for this project I will be creating a 2D game in construct with a focus on mechanics and music with simple pixel art. It will be a top-down action adventure game with combat and visual novel-like cutscences. The combat will be in a rhythm game format, the player has to press the notes corresponding key on time to hurt the enemy. Missing a note will hurt the player. The player will be put into an unfamiliar world that they have to explore, meeting various characters and discovering new parts of the world. The structure of my game will be in various sections

with different visual and audio designs that act as levels, each area has its own unique monsters and characters.

The player will traverse each of these areas, the plot progressing and the combat becoming gradually harder with new and different mechanics for each level. I am not sure at the moment what I my plot to be, maybe having another human in this strange world that the player befriends. Some already existing games that I want to research for this project are; Undertale for it's art style, music and top-down perspective, DJ Hero for its rhythm game genre, both old Pokémon games and the Escapists for their art style and top-down gameplay, and games with good audio design and music such as Miitopia.

GANTT CHART

This is the Gantt chart that I have made to plan out what I hope to be doing during this project. This is only a rough estimate and is likely to change as the project progresses.

3 weeks dedicated to research; researching rhythm games, 2D top-down games, pixel art styles, music, voice sound effects, and also talking about the construct prototype I made prior to this.

Reflection throughout the development and talking about problems I had.

Rest of the project dedicated to development; creating pixel art, animations, music and sound effects. Development in construct which will be happening throughout this section as I implement the different things I have created.

I think my pitch went well as I got across what my game was and what I intended to do throughout the project. I think I could of improved it by talking more organically instead of just reading off the slides. Here is some of the feedback I got. It is mostly positive, saying that I have a clear idea of my concept and my skills. Some things to improve was to talk more how the game would be structured, e.g. in separate levels or following a story. I will take this feedback and think more about the structure, as I am not really sure on it and it will be important when explaining my concept.
